Leading an Event
Leading an Event
  • Thank you for volunteering to lead the event! Do not worry if you do not know the event or zone as well as you would like. The players who come for the event probably know less than you do or just do not wish to play the role of leader. At Casual Alliance we have run raids where the leader has had a printout of the quest walk-through in his/her lap and we pause occasionally while they read from it. Whether we succeed or fail we will learn and get better.
  • We are giving the leaders the freedom to run the event how they want (within reason). We want leaders AND players to realize there will be mistakes made. (And that not everyone that shows up for some events will be selected to join.)
  • Type up the following "Event" and "Details" blurbs as soon as possible and submit it to Uged at the alliance web site allianceguilds.net or in-game mail. He will post event on the calendar. Leaders with access to the shared calendar can also add the event themselves.
  • EVENT: This brief description is what shows in the small calendar box. After listing the date, just list the mob or quest, time (as EST), minimum level, max. number allowed, and the range of levels needed to make the mob blue or green. It should look like the following (hypothetical) example:

    • Baby Dragon - The name of the mob
"Den" instance in PF - Where the mob is located (an instance usually means a timer/lockout)
9:00 EST - When we all meet at the start location given in details
L 48+ - The minimum level the leader will accept for the event *
(x2 Epic) - Means there is room for 12 players maximum **
Green 51-53 - The mob is green at levels 51-53 so players at that actual level (not mentoring) will be accepted first. ***
    • * The enemies in the instance may be all 43-44, with the boss being an Epic 45^^^, but the leader can set the minimum level at a point they feel comfortable leading. A group of 45's with little experience doing the "Baby Dragon" may get owned so we set the minimum a little higher.
    • ** If 17 players show up (and the leader can only pick 12) here is one method they can use to select the group:
      • First, select two players that are at the actual level that will make the mob green. In this case it will be players between 51-53. That way, higher level players can mentor to them so both groups can be at the "green" level for quest and XP credit.
      • Next, select your main tank and two or three healers from those in the 51-53 range (if available). Keep in mind this is how your humble author would do it, but you can select however you want as long as there is a method to it.
      • Pick a scout and a mage (if available) at the levels closest to 51-53 so full HO's can be completed. Keep in mind that some players may have camped another toon at the location so if the one they logged in on is not needed, they have a back-up that may be selected.
      • Let's say you have 7 players at this point that are all at the green-con level for the mob. There are 10 players but only 5 slots left. All the 50-53 players have been chosen. There are some 48's and 49's and some 70's who are willing to mentor. There is also a player at 47 who says he/she will ding 48 with another 3%. What do you do?
      • First of all, DONT WORRY. This is a great problem to have! (You could be short and have to look for more while your group gets bored.) My guess is that two or three will say "I don't need to go. I just came to help out if needed. Some will not have Ventrilo, won't be mended yet, etc. and therefore can not join (event rules). And the other selections will be obvious because the group is low on a certain class. And if all else fails, throw it out to the group and ask what they think. If the 47 needs it to complete it for an HQ and the 70 is just doing it for loot for their alt, pick the 47. The level 70 player will understand.
      • As we get better at planning these events, and the volunteer leaders get more experience, we will make the minimum levels closer to the boss mob's level. If you have lots of experience now, feel free to fun the event however you want.
    • *** There needs to be at least one player in each group of 6 at these "green" levels so higher players can mentor to them. In many cases it is a higher level player leading the group, so having members at this level are key. Generally 6 to 8 levels above the final mob makes it green. Keep in mind that you do not want all the slightly lower mobs you meet on your way to the Epic/Heroic to be gray with no XP or loot. But if time is an issue, you can also keep the higher levels unmentored until you quickly kill the mobs on your way to the boss, then mentor again.
  • DETAILS of the mob/quest should include the following information:
Where the group meets to select the members.
Is it a raid mob, access quest, HQ, etc? (and what the goals are)
    Estimated time to complete
Suggested items to bring (resist armor, potions, type of weapon, etc.)
How participants will be selected if more show up than needed (or maybe plan a back-up quest)
If this is the start of a long quest series (or the final boss for one) please state the point in the quest the players need to be up to. (Do they need to know a specific language to begin the quest? Do they need to have completed the "Kill 50 Grinnins" part?)

Following are two examples of what should be included in the "Details" section. Again, most of this info can be obtained by doing a quick internet search. Walkthroughs are available on a number of websites.

Raid for "Big Blob" Level 54 (group x 4
Contested mob in Silent City (Sinking Sands)
Saturday Oct 5th 9:00 pm EST
For levels 54-60
Est. time 2 hours: One hour to fight our way in and an hour to spawn him, if not up.
Need at least three 57's or 58's so higher levels can mentor to "green" the mob for quest and loot credit.
Blob casts massive poison AOE's so resist potions and armor are recommended. He is also immune to slashing so bring a couple different weapons.
Back-up plan (if not enough show) - will help others finish Carpet quest

Quest for "Giant Slayer Sword"
Wed. Oct 2nd 8-10 pm EST, Meet on TS docks
For group of 6 only. If we have more show up, leader picks group but we will run it again, promise!
Will try to get through the first half of this long quest (Epic x 3 mob in Permafrost ends this quest)
For levels 38-42 (higher levels must mentor down to low 40's)
Starts in TS then goes to Zek and Permafrost
Must be able to speak Giant to participate
Most mobs we see will use Crush or Slash so any armor or potions with those resists will help
